Worship Planning Notes
What is Emancipation Proclamation and Juneteenth? You hear these words synonymously used in culture and history, but can you give a clear answer to the question? View today’s Cultural Resources unit for the answer.
Today, we stand on the shoulders of slaves who worked, toiled, and fought for the freedom that we now enjoy. Being free from chains, bonds, whips, and masters is not the only freedom we have; we are mentally and spiritually free if we make the choice to embrace such freedom.
On this day celebrate freedom. Consider celebrating in the following ways:
- Feature a Video Presentation during the Sunday School/Teaching hour of your church. Assemble children and adults in a room to view “Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom” (PBS Documentary).
- Present “Morning Monologues with Slaves.” Utilize the Youth ministry in your church (ages 8–18) to offer the monologues. Challenge them with these questions:
|
Partner with your Fine Arts Ministry and Christian Education Ministry to help develop the monologues. If you do not have these ministries, find persons with expertise in education, fine arts, and communications. The preparatory time for this should be at least 1 month.

1. Call to Worship
Freedom Rings!
By Charles B. Cotton, Jr.
With Excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech”
Minister: | Some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. You are the veterans of redemptive suffering. |
Congregation: | We believe that if our God is for us then who can be against us! |
Minister: | With God before you, then, let freedom ring! Let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire! Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York! Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania! Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California! Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia! Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee! Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi! From every mountainside, let freedom ring! |
Congregation: | Together we sing, “My country, ‘tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.” |
Minister: | When we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, |
All: | “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!” |
