Key Scripture: Jeremiah 3:15
“Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will lead you with knowledge and understanding.”
Worship Planning Notes
- The Occasion: Include a special presentation during the service by a member or members of the congregation. Have them share fond memories of the pastor and his or her ministry.
- Through the Years: Develop themes throughout the service that focus on key ministry outcomes during the pastor’s tenure.
- Firsts: Identify members in the congregation who may have been part of some “firsts” for the pastor, such as:
- First Right-hand of fellowship
- First baptism
- First marriage
- First Baby blessing
- First minister ordained at the church
- First program started
1. Litany or Congregational Reading
Processional Music
(a) The Glorious Medley. By B. B. McKinney, Elisha Hoffman, and Andraé Crouch. Arr. by Omar Dickenson. For SATB choir. This is an arrangement that links three hymns of glory in three different styles. “Glorious Is Thy Name” is in a very traditional anthem style, followed by “Glory to His Name” with a rhythmically punctuated gospel style, and ending with “To God Be the Glory” three times: flowing, grandly, and finally triumphantly, each a half step higher than the previous.
Invocation
(b) Invocation
We praise God for the Word today.
The Word of God is strong, powerful, persuasive, and pervasive.
The Word of God brings deliverance.
The Word of God brings hope.
The Word of God liberates, inspires, and encourages.
Thank God for His Word. Thank God for the holy writ.
Not only do we thank God for the Word,
we thank God for servants who bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Today, we celebrate our shepherd.
We celebrate our leader.
We celebrate our pastor.
We thank God for loving and hardworking shepherds and their families.
Amen.

Lord, all that we have comes from you. As you have so richly given to us, we have joyfully returned to you. We are grateful today that you have blessed us with the precious gift of our Pastor and Mr./Mrs. ______, for ___ years of shepherding your flock. Through their ministry, we have benefited from you “good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over.” And out of that abundance, O Lord, we thank you that we can also be a blessing to our Pastor and his/her family today. We present these gifts to our Pastor and his/her family, and we further recommit ourselves, our time, our resources, and our talents to your glory, as we labor with him/her in your vineyard. As our praises to you and our prayers for our Pastor go up, let your blessings continue to be poured out on your shepherd and this flock. We will forever give you all the glory, all the honor, and all the praise. Hear us, we pray, in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
