Worship Planning Notes

Among Christians, Lent was originally the period of prebaptismal preparation and, later, a period of public penance. Eventually, it became a 40-day devotional preparation for Easter traditionally based on Jesus’ wilderness fast (see Mark 1:13).

1. Litany (Psalm 130, NIV)
Leader: Out of the depths we cry to you, O Lord;
Congregation: O Lord, hear our voices. Let your ears be attentive to this cry for mercy.
Leader: If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
Congregation: But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.
Leader: I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.
Congregation: My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.
Leader: O Israel, put your hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption.
ALL: He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.
