Fellowship Baptist Church, Chicago, IL

Worship Planning Notes

For those who perform baptism by immersion, it would be ideal if the baptistery could be adorned with African religious symbols, art, cloth, etc. One option is to have the newly baptized person wrapped in African cloth after emerging from the water.

In your church, if Baptism occurs by sprinkling or pouring water, use an African gourd or bowl as the water container.

1. Responsive Reading

Leader: And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

People: And straightaway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him.

Leader: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

People: And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Leader: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of God and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Leader: Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

People: Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

ALL: On this occasion of Baptism, we thank God for those who this day have decided to walk in the newness of life. I pledge to support them, to pray for their strength, and to encourage them as they mature in the Christian Faith. Amen.
