KINSHIP AND SINGLES SUNDAY

MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES

Sunday, November 16, 2008

J. Anthony Plenty, Guest Lectionary Liturgist
Minister of Music and Youth, Union Chapel M.B. Church, Huntsville, AL

Worship Planning Notes

This corporate worship experience is an opportunity for the body of believers to reflect on their relationships with and love for: parents, siblings, children, friends, neighbors, etc. On Kinship and Singles Sunday we celebrate loving, nourishing relationships that God has made possible. Because this is a service that is themed on relationships and commitment, it is important that your selected music reflects these ideas. We hope that the suggested music below assists you in your worship design.

If you have a signing ministry, have them participate in songs 7(a) and 12(d).

1. Invocation
Now God, we bless you for this day. Thank you for life and nourishing relationships. We invoke your presence in this house. With all our heart, mind, and strength, we come together, surrounded by friends, family, and other kindred, unified in Christian love, that we might corporately worship the one true God. Reign in this place. Rule in this place. Let your will be done in this worship experience. Devoting ourselves to pleasing you, we will be careful to give you all the glory, all the honor, and all the praise. Amen.

Responsive Reading: Satisfied
Female Leader: I am single and satisfied. I am not deficient but marvelously and wonderfully made in the image of God. So, I am satisfied.
Congregation: We are satisfied and celebrate your singleness. We value you as a treasure made in the image of God. We shall not make assumptions about you or place demands upon you that we have no right to make. We are satisfied and celebrate your singleness.
Male Leader:

I am single and satisfied. I am not looking, torn, or confused. I am satisfied. I thank God for knowing me before I sprang forth from my mother’s womb and for preparing for me a God-given purpose. God knew that I would stand here today and tell you, I am satisfied.

Congregation: We are satisfied and celebrate your singleness. We celebrate you as a purposeful man of God. We will not make assumptions about you or place demands upon you that we have no right to make. We are satisfied and celebrate your singleness.
Male Leader: I am a single father and I am satisfied. I am proud to have been called to lead my children. I am not broken. I am not overwhelmed. I am called and equipped. I am satisfied.
Congregation:

We are satisfied and celebrate you and your children. We will not make assumptions about you or place demands upon you that we have no right to make. We are satisfied and celebrate you, your children, and your singleness.

Female Leader: I am a never-married grandmother rearing my grandchildren and I am satisfied. I celebrate my entire life story and all that I have grown through. I cherish the opportunity to save and safe-guard another generation. I am satisfied.
Congregation: We are satisfied and celebrate that you have never been married and are rearing your grandchildren. We will not make assumptions about you or place demands upon you that we have no right to make. We are satisfied and celebrate you and your grandchildren.
ALL: We are all kindred. Some have no blood relatives, but they do have a family; they have us. We are all kindred. Our prayer, our goal, our highest desire, is that no one in this family shall ever be without family. And it is so. And it is so.

13. Audio Visual Suggestions
If you are able to display video during the worship service, construct a slideshow featuring singles and kindred. The slide show would include images that celebrate single persons and show a variety of manifestations of the term kindred and not just nuclear families. Display the slideshow throughout the service. If you cannot display a video, at least display pictures throughout the sanctuary and or in your church bulletin/order of worship.

14. Other Recommendations
If you have a Sign Language Ministry, include them when songs **7(a) and 12(d) are sung. Invite them to teach the choir to sign the entire songs. The solo parts should be signed by an individual other than the soloist. By the choir signing these already powerful songs, a stronger atmosphere of unity is created.
