MISSION SUNDAY (MISSION WORK AT HOME)

MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES

Worship Planning Notes

The Church is the spiritual healing organism for communities. As you prepare for worship this Sunday, think of ways to heal your community as you celebrate Mission Sunday in your local church. Strong and relevant Christian education ministries produce strong mission-focused churches. This is a great time to revitalize and/or ensure that your Christian education ministry is giving leadership to strong mission efforts in your community.

Marino J. Dasmarinas reflects on the mission of the church: “God’s word is not bounded by time and space; it’s always relevant and timely. The command of Jesus to His disciples to proclaim the message and make a difference on the lives of their fellowmen is also His command to us right now: Proclaim the message and make a difference in the lives of your fellowmen.”

Suggestions to enhance your worship experience/celebration:

  • Have a teen reader and the congregation recite the verses below for your Mission Sunday (Mission Work at Home) worship service.

“Heal the World” by Michael Jackson

Teen Reader: There’s a place in your heart and I know that it is love and this place could be much brighter than tomorrow.

And if you really try you’ll find there’s no need to cry. In this place you’ll feel there’s no hurt or sorrow.

There are ways to get there if you care enough for the living. Make a little space, make a better place.

ALL: Heal the world.
Make it a better place for you and for me and the entire human race.

There are people dying.
If you care enough for the living,
Make it a better place for you and for me.
  • Incorporate a testimonial period for persons (young and old) to share their stories of how they have been helped through mission services provided by your church. Hopefully this will inspire more members in your church to engage in mission work. As a second option, you can place the testimonials in an insert for each bulletin.

  • Invite staff and residents of recovery programs to worship with your local church on Mission Day. During the service offer a blessing for the leaders of these programs and those served by each organization. Organizations to consider inviting (you are not limited to these groups) include:
    • Narcotics Anonymous groups
    • Local cancer support groups
    • Grief support groups
    • S.O.S. (Survivors of Suicide)
    • Alzheimer and dementia support groups
    • Family Support Program (for Families of Mentally Disabled Children)
    • HIV/AIDS organizations
    • Veterans organizations
    • Staff and residents of homeless shelters
    • Organizations that serve abused women and children
    • Big Brothers and Big Sisters
  • Your Men’s or Diakanos Ministry could host a night of fellowship and share with local organizations that are working to combat juvenile delinquency in your community. Depending upon the size of your congregation, host a group of 20–30 young men so that they all get to share in the evening’s events. This can begin a spiritual healing process for those who don’t have positive male and female influences in their lives. It can also become a major men’s ministry project for your church. 1. Litany

Leader: Lord God, you were a healer to those who need healing and a comforter to those who need comforting.

People: Your name be praised.

Leader: Deliver those who need deliverance; bring resilience to the minds and bodies of our elders.

People: Your name be praised.

Leader: You have forgiven us of sin and disobedience;

People: We are thankful, O God.

Leader: Strengthen your Church to go out into the world and serve those who need to be delivered from the hardships of this world.

People: Strengthen us, O God, to serve our community with zeal and joy.

Leader: Sustain those who face long illness, bearing them up on the wings of faith and courage;

People: Sustain us, and make us whole.

Leader: Break the bonds of our imprisonment to fear, compulsion, and addiction;

People: Hear us, and set us free.

Leader: Deliver us from laziness and unconcern for the plight of the poor;

People: Renew within us a spirit of mission, O God.

Leader: Fill us with the fire that urges us to be your witnesses through service;

People: Come with filling power, O God.

ALL: Work through us, your church, your chosen people, to help bring light to this community. We declare healing and restoration to those who are broken and are in need of a touch from the Lord. We declare their restoration because we will be your feet and hands. Hold us accountable. In your name we pray. Amen.
