Worship Planning Notes
As you celebrate the officers and leaders in your congregations, get excited and enjoy celebrating the new journey of the persons being installed. Please do not limit your planning to these ideas. Instead, maximize the opportunity to celebrate as a congregation the team of leaders that God has given to your church and community.
Consider the following suggestions for this moment on the Church Calendar:
- Today’s theme is to celebrate church officers and leaders, but please keep in mind that worship is intended first to celebrate God. Themes are tools to enhance creativity in creating a worship experience that allows all participants to focus on a “specific” moment in the life of a church.
- There are multiple hymns suggested for this Worship unit. Hymns are still a valuable source of musical theology. As a music director or worship leader, you know what hymns are favorites of your officers and leaders. During the celebration, consider adding a medley of hymns/congregational songs that will uplift your officers and leaders regardless of their age group.
- During the Installation of Church Officers/Leaders Litany, ask the newly installed leaders to come to the front of the sanctuary and face the congregation as the litany is being read.
- During the offering or just as the service begins, show a slideshow with a brief bio, picture, and ministry position of all new officers/leaders. The slideshow should be a maximum of 4 minutes.
- As you prepare to install new officers/leaders and celebrate the team that currently exists, plan to have an
event(s) outside of worship for fellowship among officers/leaders. For example:
- Retreat to a place for the leadership team to bond, fellowship, and celebrate the calling that God has given to each person. While retreating each person can share with the entire team their faith journey. In preparation for the retreat, ask each person to bring one item that has helped them to answer their ministry calling.
- Invite leaders and officers of other congregations to join in to give insight and encouragement to your new leaders.
- During the retreat, plan to honor current leaders on a personal basis for their contributions to the ministries of your church.
1. Litany, Responsive Reading, and Invocation
(a) Litany – Installation of Church Officers/Leaders
Leaders: | Lord, we thank You for the opportunity to serve as leaders in Your work. A work that involves us in something greater than ourselves, a work that transcends the mundane pursuits of this world. |
People: | Lord, we are grateful. |
Leaders: | We realize that we are stewards of this privilege of leadership and we must give an account for this stewardship. We understand that You look for faithfulness in stewards, and may that faithfulness be evident in the leadership we give. |
People: | Lord, help us to be faithful supporters. |
Leaders: | Let us not use these entrustments of leadership to lord over Your people. Let us not seek to rule, but to serve the church through the positions we are privileged to hold. Let us take up the mantle of servanthood and not merely wear our titles as badges of honor. |
People: | Jesus requires that all be servants. |
Leaders: | May we be eager to use the talents and resources that we have received from You, to advance Your kingdom through the leadership opportunity given to us. May we not be guilty of burying our God-given assets in the earth of excuses. |
People: | Let us be eager. |
Leaders: | Help us not grow weary in well doing, even when the task of leadership becomes difficult and fails to produce immediate results. Help us to know that we will reap the harvest of faithful leadership, if we faint not. |
People: | Let us never give up. |
Leaders: | May we rely on the Holy Spirit both to enable us to lead and empower those we lead to advance Your kingdom. Let us never depend upon worldly means to accomplish Your work—for our work is accomplished “not by power, not by might, but by the Spirit.” |
All: | Let Your Spirit lead us. Amen. |
(b) Responsive Reading – Prayer
Leader: | Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. |
People: | If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer according to the Word and the will of God. |
Leader: | Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous are powerful and effective. |
People: | And will not God bring about justice for His chosen ones, who cry out to Him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth? |
Leader: | But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. |
People: | And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. |
Leader: | This, then, is how you should pray: |
ALL: | Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name, your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen. |
