Worship Planning Notes
Consider the following suggestions for involving your congregation in concrete actions:
- On the Sunday of the Worship Moment, sponsor a blanket drive before and after the service. Encourage your congregation to bring in lightly-used or new blankets. Select a ministry from your church that ministers through missions and outreach to deliver the blankets to a local homeless shelter, and at the completion of the Worship Moment, take all blankets that are collected to the shelter.
- Provide a congregational leaflet highlighting local outreach organizations that help the homeless, invalid, and poor. Ensure that the leaflet provides the essentials for parishioners to contact these organizations. Encourage members of your congregation to execute justice by volunteering their time and resources to one of the listed charities.
- Select a homeless shelter and provide dinner for its residents after the Worship Moment. Encourage parishioners to participate in this dinner. Use this time to celebrate the residents and make them feel welcomed, encouraged, and motivated. Select specific ministries that would like to extend their service beyond the Worship Moment to serve and greet the honorees. At the conclusion, provide a “dinner gift” for each person to remember this special Worship Moment and outreach.
1. Call to Worship
Economic Justice
Leader: | My brothers and sisters, now is the acceptable time to provide economic justice for all of God’s people! Will you be an advocate? Will you let your voice be heard as the battle wages to feed, clothe, and house those who are without? |
People: | Yes, I will be an advocate. Yes, I will lift my voice in the battle to feed, clothe, and house those who are without. |
Leader: | Will you seek economic justice and be a source of the same? Will you let your voice be heard for fairness in lending? Will you extract justice from those institutions that control the wealth that flows in and out of communities? You cannot do all things, but will you do what you can do? |
People: | Yes, I will seek economic justice and be a source of the same. I will let my voice be heard for fairness in lending. I will act to extract justice from those institutions that control the wealth that flows in and out of communities. I cannot do all things, but that which I can do, I will do. |
All: | Hallelujah, we are God’s hands, mouths, and feet in the earth. Lord, lead us, energize us, give us courage, give us strategies and new mercies day by day, for now is the acceptable time to provide economic justice for all of God’s people. We will be deterred by difficulties. We will not be fatigued by the weight of the enemy. We will not fail because our God is a God of justice and a God who gives victory. Amen. Amen. Amen! |
