Worship Resources
EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION DAY AND JUNETEENTH MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES Tuesday, January 1, 2008 L’Tanya Moore, Guest Lectionary Liturgist Minister of Music, St. Philip AME Church, Atlanta, GA Worship Planning Notes Watch Night and Emancipation Proclamation/Juneteenth services are connected in tone, and in some faith communities, in proximity relative to when they are celebrated. This Emancipation Proclamation/Juneteenth worship service continues the tone of the lectionary worship service design provided for Watch Night. The order of the items provided in this worship design does not constitute a recommendation for an order of worship. Each faith community should always make this decision based upon the vision of the pastor and church for worship during every liturgical moment. Also, a church with a Praise Team may decide that songs historically relegated to the congregation should be shared between the Praise Team and the congregation. 1. Responsive Reading Leader: Freedom: We fought for it and died for it. People: Freedom we have gained and there are freedoms yet to be obtained. Leader: We have the freedom to dream in a new year filled with possibilities, casting off old things that are too weighty to bear and old habits that hinder us. People: We have the freedom to embrace new hopes and new visions that are personal, communal, and worldwide. We shall not fully inhale freedom until it is breathed around the world. Leader: We are people of hope, undeterred, and people of faith. This is what makes us free. Collective: We serve the One who has made us free indeed, no turning back, no turning back. 2.
