STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY (TITHING OF FINANCES)

MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES

Sunday, November 14, 2010

Nolan Williams, Jr., Lectionary Team Liturgist, and Kenneth Mosley, Assistant Liturgist

Worship Planning Notes

Tithing is the primary means by which God’s house is resourced. God’s promise to Israel extends to us: your tithe activates the windows of heaven; blessings will flow abundantly. On this day of worship, we charge our faith community to be obedient to God’s commands regarding stewardship of their finances.

1. Call to Worship, Centering Prayer, and Litany
Call to Worship – Malachi 3:8-12 (NRSV)

v. 8 Will anyone rob God? Yet you are robbing me! But you say, “How are we robbing you?” In your tithes and offerings!
v. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me—the whole nation of you!
v. 10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing.
v. 11 I will rebuke the locust for you, so that it will not destroy the produce of your soil; and your vine in the field shall not be barren, says the Lord of hosts.
v. 12 Then all nations will count you happy, for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts.

Centering Prayer
O God, it is our honor to participate in building your kingdom. Thank you for the opportunity to give our finances to the House of God. You have given us so much, and we count it a privilege to return just a portion of your bounty to the Church for Kingdom purposes. Help us to always be cheerful givers. Amen.

Litany
Reader: We recognize that the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.
People: The world and they that dwell therein belong to God, and every good and perfect gift comes from him.
Reader: It is of God’s mercy that we are not consumed; God’s compassion doesn’t fail but is new each morning.
People: It is God’s faithfulness that sustains us. The love of God embraces us, and our Creator’s blessings overwhelm us.
Reader: Therefore, we find joy in abiding by kingdom principles of tithing and stewardship.
People: Our tithe symbolizes all of the ways that we have been blessed by God: financially and with gifts and talents.
Reader: And we offer all of these as gifts back to God, knowing that God delights in cheerful giving.
All: We lift our hands and stand with glad hearts that we can give and that we desire to give. Thank you for your continued grace. Amen.
