Worship Planning Notes

Holy Thursday focuses on the episodes leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion. Here we find the Savior realizing that he is about to die, and knowing he has been betrayed by one of his disciples. He provides an example for us when he decides to go to Gethsemane to pray.

Begin your service with organized prayer. It can be for a period of time prior to the start of the worship service, or it can be incorporated into the service itself. Have your prayer ministry, ministers, elders, deacons, stewards, altar guild, etc., lead the congregation in prayers from the altar. The prayers can be formal prayers for the following:

  1. Personal needs;
  2. Families;
  3. The healing of our nation and world;
  4. Your church and the Church universal;
  5. The salvation of the unsaved.

Your music ministry should choose music that enhances the worship atmosphere. Instrumental music will work well during the period of prayer, but singing can also be effective. See 13. Audio Visual Suggestions at the end of this unit for recommendations.

1. Scripture Reading
After saying this Jesus was troubled in spirit, and declared, “Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me.” The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he was speaking. One of his disciples—the one whom Jesus loved—was reclining next to him; Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. So while reclining next to Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?” Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. After he received the piece of bread, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “Do quickly what you are going to do.” Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. Some thought that, because Judas had the common purse, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the festival” or, that he should give something to the poor. So, after receiving the piece of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night. (John 13:21-30, NRSV)

13. Audio Visual Suggestions
Here is a place where your media ministry can actually guide the period of prayer prior to the start of the service. The media ministry can post directions through screen text or the church order of worship/bulletin for the church to begin a season of prayer, be it in the pews or at the altar. If possible, have your media ministry prepare looping slides or even worship videos of peaceful nature scenes such as running streams or flower gardens once the prayer period begins. Soothing worship videos during prayer are always effective.

14. Other Recommendations
Have your drama ministry prepare a skit that recreates the scene in the lection Scripture (John 13:21-30), where Jesus confronts his disciples to tell them that one of them will betray him. It is recommended that the script recreate the scene as it occurs in the Bible, rather than according to a playwright’s personal perspective. The goal is to commemorate this significant event in Jesus’ life and its importance to us and not to agitate, offend, or initiate controversy due to modern interpretation.
