THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT AND OFFICERS DAY
MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES
Sunday, December 13, 2009
Ramón D. Bryant, Guest Lectionary Liturgist
Director of Music Chancel Choir, Douglas Memorial Community Church, Baltimore, MD
Worship Planning Notes
To highlight Officers’ Day, have all church officers wear name badges that include the office they hold, and have them serve as greeters to entering congregants. Following the worship service, host a reception where church officers can interact with the congregation and speak personally with them, describing their responsibilities as a church officer. Have a display area or booths set up in a common fellowship area that visually displays the church ministries individually, with representatives from the ministry there to highlight the goals and responsibilities of the ministry, as well as the need for more volunteers.

Spoken Call to Worship
(e) “Lift Up Your Heads!”
Lift Up Your Heads!
Lift up your heads!
Lift up your voices with shouts of praise.
For behold, salvation is coming out of Zion!
Let us honor our God with a spirit of gratefulness that banishes despair.
Honor him with a spirit of love that eradicates suffering.
Honor him with a spirit of joy that restores hope through his coming redemption.
Let us honor him with a spirit of thanksgiving that revokes worry.
Lift your hands in praise that he may strengthen your arms in his service.
Let us sing together, let us pray together, let us dance together,
Let us prepare the way of our God!
2. Litany | |
Stewardship | |
Leader: | O God, we desire to be good stewards of all that you have made: the earth, the world, and all that dwells therein. All that we have comes as a trust from you. |
People: | God, Elohim, we give thanks for your gifts to us. |
Leader: | We are called by God to use whatever gifts we have been given in service to others. |
People: | As you have so freely given to us and lovingly made us what we are, we now freely give back to you the substance of our lives—our time, talent, and money. |
Leader: | We are reminded in the gospel that from the poverty of the cross we have gained the richness of life. |
People: | Thank you, Lord, for allowing us to give to the work you have assigned our hands to do in this your earthly kingdom. |
Leader: | You have put your divine stamp on us, endowed us with honor, and created us in your likeness. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. Through providence and grace we offer our tithes and offerings on your altar. |
People: | Lord, Adonai, where our hearts and hands are closed, open them. Where our resolve is weak, strengthen us. |
Leader: | Our health and strength have come from you and it is you who make our financial resources possible. |
People: | Teach us to give as we have received. Remind us that what we claim as ours is really yours. Without your gifts to us we have nothing. |
Leader: | We are called by you, O Lord, to be good stewards of all that has been entrusted in our care. You have called us to honor your name with our presence and our service. |
People: | Gracious God, our prayer is that we may give a good accounting of our stewardship. |
Leader: | We have received the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ as a gift, and we have been made his disciples. |
ALL: | We pray that we shall be good and faithful stewards, sharing with others the light that Jesus has given to us, ever giving and serving from a willing heart. We have freely received, now let us freely give! |
