MISSIONARY SUNDAY
(MISSION WORK AT HOME)

MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES

Sunday, October 4, 2009

White Rock Baptist Church, Philadelphia, PA

Worship Planning Notes

The month of October (or any month) can be established by the congregation as one in which the focus will be on local missions. The church bulletin can include an emphasis page that provides a list of homeless shelters, senior citizen homes, and nursing homes with their addresses, phone numbers, and contact persons. Information on “Habitat for Humanity” and other service-oriented organizations can also be included. The aim is to motivate members to move beyond intentions to actively demonstrate the love of Christ. Your music and arts ministry can play a central role in providing music and other forms of worship at a variety of  venues.

The congregation can contribute toward the goal of having the church complete a certain number of hours for the month spent volunteering in various capacities, such as having each auxiliary spend 30 hours during Missionary Month at Home volunteering for the organizations you list and doing things such as serving food, tutoring children, cleaning homes of the elderly, etc.

1. Invocation or Litany
(a) Invocation

Almighty, merciful, and everlasting God, the light of the world, have compassion, we pray, upon those who are in need. And as you did by the preaching of your apostles, cause the light of your gospel to shine throughout the world. We thank you for the privilege of prayer; and may our prayers be consistent with the prayer that you taught us. Please enable us to allow our will to be lost in yours.

Please forgive us for continuously failing to show love and compassion to those near us. Help us to know that if we are going to be blessed we must bless, if we are going to be loved we must love, and if we are going to be lifted we must lift. Keep us mindful of the widows and orphans, the hungering and homeless, the lame and the blind. O Lord God, there is none like you in all heaven or on earth. Please hear our prayers for people everywhere; take pity on our supplications. Let your Holy Spirit ever be in us that we may be pure and holy in your sight as we live out the Christian duties assigned to us until at last we come to the place you have prepared for all who have loved and kept your commandments. In the name of he who said, “Behold, I come quickly.” Amen.

(b) Litany
Leader: Jesus calls us to go into all of the world, the world that God so loved that he gave his only begotten Son.
Congregation I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.
Leader: Jesus reminds us that what we do for the least, the last, the left out, and the lost of the world we have done for him.
Congregation:

For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it
not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

Leader: Jesus calls us to serve others, to provide for others, to give of ourselves to others, to be the conduit of God’s love for all the world, the world that God loves.
Congregation: Jesus claims us as the salt and light of the world, the world that God loves, and calls us to share his message of life and light and love through our deeds.
Leader:

May his name endure forever, his fame continue as long as the sun. May all nations be blessed in him; may they pronounce him happy.

Congregation:

Jesus calls us to go into all of the world, the world that God so loved that
he gave his only begotten Son.

All:

Go into all of the world and love the world that God loves. Do this in
deeds and not words only.
