A SERVICE OF HEALING
(For those suffering emotional distress, grief, divorce, and physical ailments)

MUSIC & WORSHIP RESOURCES

Sunday, January 11, 2009

Michelle Riley Jones, Lectionary Team Liturgist

Worship Planning Notes
God gives many gifts to the church, and one of these gifts is the gift of healing. However, it is not necessary to have a person with a healing gift to do a healing service. James 5:13-16 reminds us the church is called to be a HEALING COMMUNITY:

“Is any one of you in trouble? They should pray.
Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise.
Is any one of you sick? They should call the elders of the church
to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person whole;
the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore
confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that
you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

Healing Affirmations
In healing services, affirmations can provide a new way of looking at ourselves that can ultimately bring healing to our bodies. Paul admonishes us “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of [our] minds” (Romans 12:2). What we believe affects our attitudes. Our faith can make us whole. The use and repetition of healing words brings changes to our mind, then to our body and spirit. Affirmations can transform our way of seeing ourselves and God’s presence in our lives. Affirmations can be found in:

  • Romans 12:1-2
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
  • Philippians 4:8-9
  • Philippians 4:19

Healing Scripture and Touch
The reading of Scripture helps to activate our faith. As we listen to Scriptures, we awaken to God’s intimate and personal healing word for us. In combination with laying on of hands, reading holy Scriptures becomes “wholly reading.” Some healing Scriptures include:

  • Acts 5:16
  • Jeremiah 30:17
  • Isaiah 58:8

Healing Communion
Healing Communion reminds us that Christ’s love for us, exhibited through his death on the cross for us, can be life-transforming. It is this love that can bring healing to our body, mind, and spirit. Because of his love, we do not have to sacrifice ourselves in abusive and disempowering life situations. We can face our pain knowing that God is with us and desires that we have a full life. The celebration of communion calls us to claim God’s healing in our lives and embrace his gift of finding wholeness in him.

1. Litany, Responsive Reading, or Invocation
(a) Call to Worship

Healing for the World

O God of all creation, you have fearfully and wonderfully fashioned us and breathed your life into us; from the crown of our heads to the soles of our feet, Lord, Reign.
Reign in us, Precious Savior, Reign.

As the Great Physician who healed the woman at the well, you are the same Wonder who finds us in the uttermost parts of the world to heal us—mind, spirit, and body.
Awesome Healer, rescue and deliver, even now.

As the Master Potter and Crafter who takes broken things and mends them back together again, melt us and mold us into the restored children, women, and men that you have destined us to be. Providing Shepherd who charts the path ahead of us, who both precedes and follows us, place your hand of blessing on our heads and shepherd our souls. We find refuge and rest in your care.
We bless your Holy Name and we praise you for being the God who heals not only our bodies but also our souls.

God is a Wonder. Hallelujah, God reigns!

Prayer
Responsive Prayer for Healing and Wholeness of All Sorts. By Edward Fudge

Leader: Let us name before God those for whom we offer our prayers.

People: [Spontaneously name those for whom you now wish to intercede in prayer.]

Leader: God, Our Healer, your will for all people is health and salvation. We praise you and thank you, O Lord.

People: Son of God, you came that we might have life, and have it more abundantly. We praise you and thank you, O Lord.

Leader: Holy Spirit, you make our bodies the temple of your presence. We praise you and thank you, O Lord.

People: Lord, grant your healing grace to all who are sick, injured, or disabled, that they may be made whole. Hear us, O Lord of life.

Leader: Grant to all who seek your guidance, and to all who are lonely, anxious, or despondent, companionship, knowledge of your will, and an awareness of your presence. Hear us, O Lord of life.

People: Mend broken relationships, and restore those in emotional distress to soundness of mind and serenity of spirit. Hear us, O Lord of life.

Leader: Bless physicians, nurses, and all others who minister to the suffering, granting them wisdom and skill, sympathy, and patience. Hear us, O Lord of life.

People: Give to the dying peace and a holy death, and uphold by the grace and consolation of your Holy Spirit those who are bereaved. Hear us, O Lord of life.

Leader: Restore to wholeness whatever is broken by human sin: in our lives, in our nation, and in the world. Hear us, O Lord of life.

People: You are the Lord who does wonders. You have declared your power among the peoples.

Leader: With you, O Lord, is the well of life, and in your light we see light.

People: Hear us, O Lord of life. Heal us, and make us whole.

Leader: Almighty God, giver of life and health: send your blessing on all who are sick, and on all who minister to them, that all weakness may be vanquished by the triumph of the risen Christ, who lives and reigns forever and ever.

All: Savior of the world, by your cross and precious blood you have redeemed us. Save us and help us, we humbly pray, Amen.

Call to Discipleship. By Carolyn W. Dandridge and Catrinia N. Harrison. Adapt. by Michelle Riley Jones

People of God, hear and obey the gospel proclamation. In the midst of being tested and humbled, cling to that which is real. Remember the moans of the weak, and the wailing of the sick and diseased. Hear now the utterances of thankfulness and praise, as God has been in our midst, and has healed and relieved. You have listen to Scriptures, songs and the Word proclaimed; hear God calling you through them. Soften your heart to react with love. Rejoice and be filled with the goodness of God.

(b) Healed by the Power of His Word. By Stephen A. Hurd

Benediction Prayer
For A Service of Healing

We have met with the Great Physician, our Healer, and our Restorer.
Today, we rise from our infirmities; we rise from our diseases;
we rise from our weaknesses, and we go forth healed—mind, body, and spirit—
because we have communed with him, and he has made us whole. Amen.

13. Audio Visual Suggestions
(a) Screens can depict Biblical scenes of Jesus’ healing and restoration. Some examples include:
  • Syro-Phonecian girl (Matthew 15:21-28; Mark 7:24-30)
  • Cleansing a leper (Mathew 8:1-4; Mark 1:40-45; Luke 5:12-16)
  • Paralytic let down through the roof (Matthew 9:1-8; Mark 2:1-12; Luke 5:17-26;
  • Restoring a woman crippled for 18 years (Luke 13:10-17)
  • Restoring a man’s withered hand (Matthew 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 6:6-11)
  • Healing a man at the pool of Bethesda (John 5:2-47)
  • Jesus heals the blind and lame in the temple (Matthew 21:14)
  • Raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1-44)
  • Healing a slave’s severed ear (Matthew 26:51-54; Mark 14:47; Luke 22:49-51; John 18:10)

(b) During the Offertory or Period of Prayer, a Drama Team can have 2–4 separate groups dramatize through pantomime or freeze frame techniques several of the scenes listed above in 13(a), as a visual reminder of how God has worked in the past and is still at work today.

14. Other Worship Recommendations
(a) Consider including Communion in the healing service.

Since earliest times, this participation in Christ’s body and blood has been regarded by the faithful as related to wholeness and healing, physical as well as spiritual (1 Corinthians 11:28-31). One early church father called it “the medicine of immortality.” We understand this, not in magical terms, but as related to confession of sin, forgiveness, and oneness with the risen Christ and with his body the Church.

Compile Scripture texts, hymns, and other song verses related to healing in a small booklet to give to the congregation. The booklet can be titled “Book of Scriptures, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs: Testimonies to Divine Healing.” Your church can include a list of all the care-and-healing-related ministries in your church and community, including overviews of the ministries and contact information. Below are some suggestions for the Scriptures and song verses that can be included.

Book of Scriptures, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs:
Testimonies to Divine Healing

Scriptures
The Scriptures would be fully typed out.

  • James 5:13-16
  • Isaiah 61:1-3
  • Psalm 42
  • Mark 2:1-12

Hymns
Power, all power, surely is Thine! Touch me and heal me, Savior divine! (Have Thine Own Way)

I know my heav’nly Father knows the balm I need to soothe my woes; and with his touch of love divine, He heals this wounded soul of mine. (I Know My Heav’nly Father Knows)

Plenteous grace with Thee is found, grace to cover all my sin; let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of Thee; spring thou up within my heart, rise to all eternity. (Jesus, Lover of My Soul)

Trusting only in Thy merit, would I seek Thy face; heal my wounded, broken spirit; save me by Thy grace. (Pass Me Not)

Open now the crystal fountain whence the healing waters flow; let the fiery, cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong Deliv’rer, be Thou still my strength and shield. (Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah)

Spiritual Songs
Sometimes life will hurt you, but remember God heals. God is a healer. Sometimes weapons form against you but they’ll never prosper. Remember God is your shield. He is waiting for your call, waiting to shield you from your fall. There’s a place of rest and peace in the sanctuary. (God Is a Healer)

Reach out and touch the Master’s robe, there’s healing for your mind, body, and your soul. God can heal, he can deliver. He can mend your brokenness. He has a miracle to fit your need. Once you trust him, you will receive. (Broken, But I’m Healed)

Some things God does in secret; performed while still we pray. Our call is to be faithful, and trust Him come what may. For closed doors He will open. And lost things, He’ll restore. No matter what [you] see and have now, trust God for the more. (Rachel’s Song)
