Worship Planning Notes

In the course of planning this service, be mindful of the role of ushers and nurses in your church. These are the bearers of hospitality and healing. The smiles of the ushers are often the first ones that worshippers see. Indeed, these smiles are the firsts that many see all week. Nurses are present and prepared to serve at a moment’s notice. They remind us of the healing power of the Spirit.

In planning, think of the many ways that God welcomes us and heals. In the Black Church, as we welcome people, we often used language such as feel at home, be yourself, let the Spirit use you, all to say, you are welcome in this place. When we speak of healing, we use words such as deliverance, saved, and freed. Capture these words and testimonies throughout the service. Also, be intentional about naming the ushers and nurses in your congregation and expressing gratitude for their ministry.

1. Invocation

God of love, God of power,
Your sons and your daughters are gathered now,
Here in Your temple.

Seeking to see your face on this day.

We have come from many directions and many spaces to get here.
And we come with a variety of concerns and issues that we desire to lay at your feet.

We know that you are a miraculous God, who is able to do exceedingly and abundantly above all we can ask or think. And so, we bring our infirmities,
Our fears,
Our aches and pains,
The sicknesses that have been called “terminal.”
Our “there’s nothing the doctor can do” reports.
Our weary bodies …

We bring them to you, Jehovah Rapha, our Healer.

And in this time of worship, we ask that you would speak a word to us.
A word of Life.
A word of Encouragement.
A sustaining, life-changing Word,

For we know that with YOUR Word, you’ve
Healed the sick,
Cured the infirmed,
And even raised the dead.

So, come into this House and Speak, Lord.

Speak Lord, for your Children are listening.

In the name of Jesus,
Amen.
