Daryl Walker, African American Lectionary Liturgist
Worship Planning Notes
The theme that runs throughout this unit is that the power of addiction is not greater than the power of the Lord. So, even if we have fallen under the stronghold of an addiction, we can get up again.
Applicable Modern Songs:
(a) The Battle Is Not Yours, It’s the Lord’s. By Yolanda Adams
(b) The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power. By Andraé Crouch
(c) We Fall Down, But We Get Up. By Donnie McClurkin

1. Litany for Anti-Addiction Day
Scriptural Foundation: Romans 7:14-25
Leader: |
Today, O Lord, we acknowledge that you are God, greater than all our frailties, and we know that the Law is spiritual, and we need your will manifested in our lives.
|
People: |
Speak to us with healing and victory over our struggles.
|
Leader: |
Lord, help us to overcome the things we do, for we do the things that we hate; then we hate the things that we do. Help us to forgive ourselves for this disobedience.
|
People: |
Speak to us, Dear God, with gentleness; help us to forgive ourselves and others.
|
Leader: |
God, we seek to gain victory over our addictions and to do good even though evil is present within us.
|
People: |
Speak to us, Lord, with words of deliverance, gentle and kind but firm.
|
Leader: |
Lord, our addictions have us bound, held captive to the weakness in our members and warring against the law of our minds, bringing us into captivity to the law of sin which is in our [bodies].
|
People: |
Lord, we know that you can put to flight all things that are not of you, so here we are grievous and torn longing to be made whole. Speak Lord, quiet our members and set us free from the sins that is holding us captive.
|
Leader: |
God, you are omnipotent, you are awesome in all your ways! Speak to us and rescue us from the negative habits we have formed, from speaking slanderously against our neighbors and desiring sinful things in our lives.
|
People: |
Speak, Lord, we need to know that happy are those who take refuge in you. Free us from the bondage of all addictions that is dominating our lives.
|
Leader: |
Lord, we are wretched, and are crying out to you; deliver us from this body of death. Free us! Set us free!
|
People: |
Speak, Lord, your children are listening, for we have learned that our bodies are your Temples and we want your spirit to dwell in us. Cleanse us of all unrighteousness so will be free.
|
All: |
We thank you, O God, for creating in us a clean heart and renewing in us a right spirit to serve you as we serve each other. In the Mighty Name of Jesus. Amen. |
