Worship Planning Notes
Good Friday is also called Holy Friday, Black Friday, or Great Friday. The Liturgical Color is Red. See the African American Lectionary Liturgical Colors Corner for additional information on colors for the Easter season and all annual days of the African American faith community.
It is important on this day to not only tell the crucifixion story but to reflect on what happened on the first Good Friday. We must not overlook the shock that the execution of their master gave to the first disciples. From time to time, we also have to confront the distress of that shock and reflect upon the responses it creates in us as contemporary disciples during and after worship services.
Incorporate a moment of silence into your service to allow persons to reflect on the death of Christ.
Leave the sanctuary and church building without talking in silent reflection on the Passion of Jesus Christ. Come back on Easter ready to sing praises to God for transforming power and grace that come through the resurrection.

Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” |

The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said “An angel has spoken to him.” |

Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world shall be driven out.” |

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. |

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. |
