Edythe Poole, Guest Lectionary Liturgist
Minister of Music, Sacred Zion Full Gospel Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD

1. Litany
  Women’s Power
Leader: God, we remember the women, named and unnamed, who throughout time
have used the gifts you gave them to change the world. We call upon these foremothers to help us discover within ourselves your power and the way to use it to bring about more peace and love.

We remember Esther and Deborah, whose acts of courage saved their nation.
People: We thank you for them.
Leader: We remember Mary Magdalene and the other women who followed Jesus.
People: We thank you for them.
Leader: We remember Phoebe, Priscilla, and the other women leaders of the early church.
People: We thank you for them.
Leader: We remember Teresa of Avila and Catherine of Siena, who challenged the corruption of the church during the Renaissance.
People: We thank you for them.
Leader: We remember Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Mother Teresa, and Florence Nightingale, who worked for justice and who cared for the poor and the sick.
People: We thank you for them.
Leader: We remember our own mothers and grandmothers, whose lives shaped our own.
People: We thank you for them.
Leader: We pray for the women who suffer violence in their homes.
People: Hear our prayer, O God.
Leader: We pray for the women who live lives of poverty and malnutrition.
People: Hear our prayer, O God.
All: We remember and celebrate the power of women past and present.
As we follow in the footsteps of these holy witnesses of all ages, grant us strength and courage for the work that lies before us which we do for your glory and your people. Amen.
